Dear eNews Reader,

This is the busiest time of the legislative session as we negotiate the final details of the state budget. This year, I’m focused on high utility costs, health care, EMS, food security, transportation, and more. Federal cuts to SNAP food assistance, Medicaid, ACA subsidies, vital research, and clean energy programs alone have complicated our efforts. In the meantime, please stay safe as we head into spring; which cannot come a moment too soon.

Final Plans for Route 363 Gateway Project Approved

NYS Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Dominguez was in town to announce that the final design for the 363 Gateway Project has been approved by the Federal Highway Administration, with work to begin this spring. With plans for improved roadway infrastructure, safer and easier entry into downtown, and new green space, this is one of the most consequential redesigns the City will undergo in over 50 years. The $43M project is supported with federal and state funds.

Broome County Awarded $20M for Childcare Pilot Program

Governor Hochul visited The B.C. Center at SUNY Broome to discuss the $20M Child Care Pilot program for Broome County she proposed in the state budget. If this goes through, the County will see a major expansion of child care for children aged 0-3. As we are finalizing this year’s state budget, I will be a strong advocate for the program and for child care professionals who deserve better wages for the important work they do.

Confluence Court Apartment Complex Opens Its Doors

I attended the ribbon cutting for the new Confluence Court Apartment Complex at 200 Court Street. This historic building has sat empty for the last 15 years waiting for a new use. With 111 apartments (51 affordable and 60 that come with supportive services), there’s already a waiting list. Thank you to the Governor, DHCR and many other state agencies who helped make this happen. And a big thank to CSD Housing, Helio Health, and Eagle Star Housing.

HCA Cuts the Ribbon at New Clinton Street Facility

I attended the grand opening ceremony for Helping Celebrate Abilities’ new facility at 114 Clinton Street. HCA provides early intervention services, integrated pre-school, supportive employment, group homes, and behavioral therapies to people of all ages with disabilities. With larger gathering rooms and a kitchen, this new space will allow HCA to provide higher quality services and offer more integrated programming such as classes in cooking, crafts, and fitness.
